The face behind the cakes..

Updated: Feb 11, 2023

My first ever blog post! I have been toying with starting a blog for a while now but I could never decide where to start. What shall I write about? What does a good blog post look like? Will people even want to read what I have to say? So when it came to writing my 2023 goals list, blog posts just had to be on it. It took me a couple of weeks, but I finally decided today is the day! So I got my trusty laptop out, opened up a new window to start writing, and just stared at the blank page for 5 minutes. Then the wonderful Soph from The Little Details by Sophie suggested she interview me. Just a few questions so that you can get to know me a bit better. So here we go..

Who are you?

I'm Gemma.. the rather Disney obsessed cake designer behind White Peony Cake Co. I love all things weddings and of course, all things cake!

What started your love for cake making?

I'm not really sure.. I always remember being slightly obsessed with cake. Whether it's the fancy flavours you get in little patisseries or the way the desserts in the restaurants are arranged on the plate. As a child, I remember coming home to the smell of peanut butter cookies and shortbread and lemon jumbles (who remembers them?!) that my mum had spent all afternoon making. My mum isn't one to follow the recipe by the book, so often doubled or even tripled the recipe.. there was basically cookies as far as the eye can see! I think it was perhaps the happiness that it brought me and other people who tasted these bakes that started to ignite my love for it all. Seeing the happy faces as they indulged in a bakewell tart (or three!) I started playing with recipes and flavours whilst I was in secondary school (although I was awful at Food Tech!) making cakes for family birthdays and suchlike. Then when a cake shop opened on the same street as my mum's shop, I was obsessed! I got a little job there and the rest is history..

If you were to do anything else as a job, what would you do?

I actually was going to be a florist. My mum is a florist and I was planning to follow in her footsteps, but I needed a challenge. Something that I hadn't already spent years doing. If I had to choose now, I'm not sure. I love being creative every day and I love being a part of the wedding industry too. I'm not sure if there would be anything else that would light my fire as much as cake making does.

It makes me really upset that you don't like cheese, what do you not like about it?!

I get this A LOT! I have had a hatred for cheese for 15-20 years. I hate everything about it.. the taste, the smell, the texture, the look. It honestly turns my stomach. I don't even eat cheesecake!

Where is your favourite venue to set your gorgeous cakes up?

This question is super hard. There are so many venues that I get excited to take my cakes to. Some of them because it is a blank canvas, some because of the history and style of the venue. And some just because I love the staff! We have some incredible venues in Cornwall and no two are the same. From beach venues like Lusty Glaze Beach, countryside venues like The Barn at Pengelly and manor houses like Alverton Manor. There is something for everyone and every single style. And I just adore them all!

Well that wasn't as hard as I thought! I'd love you to join me over on my social media channels to see more of what I'm about and what I love to do. If you are looking at booking in a cake designer for your wedding or event, get in touch via my contact form. I'd love to hear from you!

Love,

Gemma x
