The top 5 Wedding Cake mistakes you're making..

Planning a wedding is HARD! There is so much to think about and so much information out there, that it can all get a little overwhelming. To make things a little easier, I've compiled my top 5 things NOT to do when booking your dream Wedding Cake. So sit down, grab a cuppa and a biscuit and have a little read..

1. Having an unrealistic budget.

So this may sound like I'm having a dig at those

with a budget, but I'm not at all. Everyone has a budget. A top line that they aren't willing to go past. Whether that's £700 or £7000. What I am saying is do your research. Most cake designers will have a pricing guide on their website, and these are here to help you. Have a look around at the kind of thing you like and get a number in your head. We completely understand that you have probably never ordered a wedding cake before and that is why we are here to help. Check my pricing guide out here.

2. Booking the cheapest cake you can find.

Good cake isn't cheap and cheap cake isn't good. This is something that is often said in the wedding industry. Kind of like 'if it's too good to be true, then it probably is'. Your wedding cake is likely to take 20+ hours to create and that's not including all of the emails, designing, sourcing ingredients etc. that goes with it. So a 4 tier cake for £250 just doesn't make sense, does it? Again, do your research. Have a look on the cake designers website and social media channels. Get a feel for the kind of work they do and get to know them. Read their 'about me' section and if you feel like they are your kind of person, get in touch!

3. Having all the tiers the same flavour.

Now this is something that I encourage massively.. if you are having more than one tier, you should have more than one flavour! Where is the fun in having them all the same?! My cake menu consists of 10 flavours, and trust me when I say this, it is impossible to choose only one. Just make sure that your favourite flavour is at the bottom, as that one is the biggest tier. Take a look at my cake menu, for something to have a little drool over.

4. Not discussing the cake table.

'Nobody puts the cake in the corner' is literally my mantra. Your wedding cake will probably be the most expensive and most beautiful cake you will ever buy. Don't leave it sat in the corner of the room, on a creased tablecloth, next to the fire extinguisher (it happens more often than you realise!) Let's make a statement of it. Is there an old fireplace that could double as a cake display area? Or perhaps a trio of tall stands, with a champagne tower and some candles? Or even better yet, is there a piano for your cake to sit on?! It doesn't have to be over the top if simple and more refined is your thing. Think about tall candles alongside your cake or perhaps a floral arrangement to match the rest of your bridal flowers. The possibilities are literally endless!

5. Not buying enough cake for your guests.

This may be a bit of a controversial point. A lot of cake designers will recommend feeding 60-70% of guests at the wedding. However, you wouldn't only book chairs for 60-70% of the guests, would you..? There are a lot of myths that there is always lots of cake left over, but I've had several couples who haven't had enough cake even though they've ordered for 100% of guests! Good cake gets eaten! Especially if there are different flavours. I know I would definitely have a piece of each flavour! Also bear in mind that the chance of you sitting down to eat cake on the day are very slim. So you want to make sure there is enough cake so that the kitchen staff/catering company can save you a few slices of each flavour. What's the point in spending hundreds of pounds on a cake if you don't even get to eat it?!

I hope these 5 points will help you on your journey to ordering your dream wedding cake. If you have any questions or would like to discuss getting your wedding cake booked in with me, get in touch via

Love,
