As a wedding planner, I’m lucky enough to work alongside some incredibly talented creatives, but every now and then, you meet a supplier whose work genuinely excites you every single time.

For me, that’s Gemma.

And if I’m being completely honest… her sticky toffee pudding cake is dangerously good. The kind of cake I could happily eat bowl after bowl of and still want another slice.

But what I love most about working with Gemma isn’t just how incredible her cakes taste, it’s how deeply she cares about design.

As someone who is incredibly styling-focused, I believe your wedding cake should never feel like an afterthought. It should be a focal point. A statement piece. Something that draws your guests in and feels completely connected to the atmosphere of your wedding day.

That’s why working with Gemma feels so effortless. We both care about the same things, texture, proportion, placement, colour, candlelight, florals, and creating something that feels beautifully considered from every angle.

And it’s exactly why, when couples ask me how to choose their wedding cake, my advice goes far beyond flavours and portions...

1. Choose Your Wedding Cake Designer Early

One of the biggest mistakes couples make when planning their wedding is leaving their wedding cake designer until the final months. The best cake designers, especially those creating bespoke luxury wedding cakes, often book up well in advance, particularly during peak wedding season.

Booking early gives you more freedom with:

  • Design concepts

  • Cake size and structure

  • Sugar flower or hand-painted details

  • Personalised flavour tastings

  • Styling discussions with your planner

If your cake is going to be a statement feature, it deserves to be part of your wedding design from the beginning.

2. Your Wedding Cake Should Match Your Wedding Styling

Your wedding cake design should never feel separate from the rest of your wedding. The most beautiful weddings feel cohesive, and that includes your cake.

When choosing your cake, think about:

  • The textures of your table linens

  • Your floral palette

  • Candlelight and tablescape styling

  • The architecture of your venue

  • The colour tones in your stationery and décor

A thoughtfully designed wedding cake should feel like an extension of your wedding aesthetic, not an afterthought.

3. Think About Your Wedding Cake Display

One of the most overlooked parts of wedding cake styling is where the cake will actually be displayed. A stunning cake can lose its impact if it’s placed in the wrong location.

When planning your wedding cake display, consider:

  • Natural light during daytime celebrations

  • Evening candlelight for romantic photographs

  • Backdrops such as florals, draping, or architectural features

  • Guest flow through the reception space

The best wedding cake display ideas turn your cake into a true focal point.

At the end of the long table is a smaller square table with a tall 4 tier cake on. The cake is white with green and white frilled detailing. The venue is Burncoose House, Cornwall.

4. Consider Your Venue Before Choosing Your Cake

Your venue plays a huge role in choosing the right wedding cake. Outdoor celebrations, marquee weddings, historic venues, and summer weddings all bring different considerations for your cake designer.

Things to think about include:

  • Delivery access

  • Setup timing

  • Temperature and storage

  • Display space

  • Cake-cutting locations

Choosing a cake that works beautifully within your venue is just as important as the design itself.

5. Wedding Cake Flavour Matters Just as Much as Design

Of course, a beautiful cake should taste incredible too. While couples often focus on wedding cake inspiration from Pinterest or Instagram, the most memorable cakes balance style with flavour. Whether you love classic vanilla, rich chocolate, citrus flavours, or something more personal, your cake should feel like a reflection of you.

The table is oval and decorated with white planters filled with blue flowers. There is also a plate filled with cake slices. The venue is Roswarne in Redruth, Cornwall.

Final Thoughts on Choosing Your Wedding Cake

When couples ask me for wedding planner tips on choosing their cake, my answer is always the same:

Your wedding cake should never feel like a last-minute decision.

The right wedding cake designer, thoughtful styling, and intentional placement can transform your cake into one of the most beautiful and photographed details of your wedding day. Because the best wedding cakes don’t just feed your guests, they tell part of your story.
